The House
Following a full restoration completed in 2021, the house has three generous reception rooms, original vaulted ceilings and handmade terracotta floors throughout. It has a large well equipped kitchen leading onto a shaded terrace with dining table seating twelve. There are lots of other seating areas around the house, which work at different times of day, according to the sun’s position.
It has five bedrooms, four double and one triple, three of which are ensuite and three with king size beds. The master bedroom has a large en-suite bathroom with walk in shower, roll top bath and two sinks. Two of the rooms share a large family bathroom also with walk in shower, roll top bath and two sinks. All the bedrooms have oak parquet flooring, ceiling fans, and inside and outside shutters with insect screens.
The garden has olive groves of over 60 trees and a stunning infinity pool with an outdoor kitchen, large dining area, shower and loo. The pool has gorgeous views of the surrounding rolling hills - a wonderfully peaceful place for long lunches under the pergola, sunbathing or sipping a cocktail as the sun sets and the swallows dive over the water. Beside the pool is a boule court when a break from swimming or sunbathing is required.

A Little History…
We bought Podere Fronzina in 2018 having looked around this lesser known but beautiful and authentic part of Southern Tuscany called the Maremma, for over two years.
We wanted a place not too far from an airport, near a largish town, less than an hour from the coast, not totally isolated but with a few farming neighbours to look after the cats when we go away, or to lend us a tractor in a crisis.
Fronzina seemed to fit the bill. It was a semi derelict shell of an 19th century farmhouse built of brick and stone but we were immediately attracted to its large generous spaces, the light flooding through holes in the walls which could become large doors and windows, and the beautiful 360 degree views from the top of its gentle hill overlooking the surrounding farms and vineyards.
The ground floor was still the original cattle shed whilst the family would have lived upstairs. The original wooden feeding trough made out of beautiful gnarled ancient chestnut punctuated by holes to tie the cattle to, ran along the length of main wall and we used it to build the large beamed mantlepiece and the dining table, as you will see in the photos.
The garden is mostly grass which we have decided not to irrigate automatically. Water is much too precious a commodity to waste on simulating an English lawn in the Mediterranean. The grass does go brown in the summer, but quickly grows back green with the autumn rains. We’ve also recently been mowing it less to give the lizards and butterflies and other creatures a quieter life and places to settle.
The most wonderful aspect of the place is the light. You can sit on a terrace or by the pool and watch the landscape transform from the cool bright light and long shadows at the beginning of the day till the blazing orange of the sunset.
